Blotchy Stain – Uneven Floor Color After Staining
Irregular dark and light patches caused by uneven stain absorption or poor application technique.
Published
What it is
Blotchy stain happens when a wood floor absorbs stain unevenly or the stain is applied without a consistent wet edge.
Signs
- Dark and light patches after the stain dries
- Uneven absorption visible during application
- Streaking or lap marks
- Final color that looks too dark, too light, or different from the sample
How ReCoat handles it
For stain-and-coat work, ReCoat tests color on the actual floor before proceeding. Porous woods may need conditioning, careful sanding, and controlled application so the final color is predictable.
Why it matters
Stain changes are permanent until the floor is sanded again. Testing first keeps the color decision grounded in how that specific floor and wood species actually respond.
